Margot Robbie's R-Rated, All-Female DC Film Is a Go! Here's What We Know

Remember in 2017, when Margot Robbie casually confirmed that a Harley Quinn spin-off film was in the works? Well, it's happening. The new project has been confirmed by multiple sources, including Robbie herself, and it's going to be called Birds of Prey. Robbie has already called it a "girl gang" film in the DC universe, and while details are still hazy and up in the air, we've still managed to wrangle a handful of exciting tidbits related to the project. Yes, it's still going to be quite some time before the film hits screens (we don't even have a release date yet!), but the information that's already out there is very exciting and encouraging. Here's what we were able to assemble so far.

1. The Story

Details on the project are quite scarce, but the film will be an all-out DC girl gang. "I was like, 'Harley needs friends,'" Robbie told Collider. "Harley loves interacting with people, so don't ever make her do a standalone film. She's got to be with other people, it should be a girl gang. I wasn't seeing enough girl gangs on screen, especially in the action space. So that was always a big part of it." It sounds like it could be along the lines of Suicide Squad, but with all women. In which case, sign me the f*ck up.

2. The Other Potential Characters

In another interview with Yahoo!, Robbie teased a bunch of character that might make it into this so-called "girl gang." There's Katana from Suicide Squad, plus more from the extended DC universe: Black Canary, Huntress, Catwoman, Hawkgirl, Power Girl, Poison Ivy, and Vixen.

3. The Rating

Oh yeah, we're getting an R rating on this one, which is pushing the envelope after the PG-13 Suicide Squad. Given the fact that Deadpool has done so well with the R-rated audiences, we sincerely hope this means we'll see Harley and her friends kicking the ever-loving sh*t out of the patriarchy.

4. The Behind-the-Scenes Magic

Wait, it gets better! It's true that the goal is to fill the film with women, but Robbie also wants it to be created by women. The Wrap reports that Cathy Yan has signed on as the director. This is historic in itself — she'll be the first Asian woman to direct a DC film. Christina Hodson is also set to pen the script, and naturally, Robbie is set to produce. F*ck yeah!

5. The Schedule

There's no release date in sight, but Robbie confirmed in yet another interview that a start-of-production date has tentatively been set: January 2019. So, hey, we could potentially hope to see Birds of Prey by the end of 2020. Fingers crossed, friends.
