Former anti-vaxx mom explains why she changed her mind

A Pennsylvania mom who grew up unvaccinated has turned into a pro-inoculation preacher.

Abbey Clint recently wrote on Facebook about choosing not to follow in her anti-vaxxer mom’s footsteps and getting her babies their much-needed shots.

“I grew up unvaccinated before it was cool,” Clint wrote in the April 30 post, that has since been shared over 3,000 times. “I’ve had to catch up on my inoculations with each pregnancy. Glad I didn’t catch measles while pregnant! Glad my babies don’t need to suffer through preventable infectious diseases.”

“Preventative maintenance saves co-pays and saves lives,” she wrote. “Proud to vaccinate!”

Clint, 30, changed her mind about vaccines when she learned that her mother-in-law almost died when she contracted measles. So, despite her parents not being happy about her choice, she decided to begin vaccinating her daughters.

“Vaccinations are safer, so much safer,” she told the Your Erie website.

Clint’s post about her decision has racked up over 6,000 comments and she engages with messages from both pro and anti-vaccination groups.

“There’s a lot of anti-vax memes being shared in my personal circles,” she told BuzzFeed News. “So I was just throwing out a different side of things, just for the sake of keeping it a conversation and not an echo chamber.”

Clint said she gradually learned about vaccines and consulted a doctor she trusted. Her daughters haven’t had any bad reactions to the shots and are healthy, she said.

“I think there is a lot of fear that is embedded in this whole issue,” she said. “That goes beyond simply the vaccines themselves.”
